Independence! On 15th August 1947, India became a nation when the English finally handed over power. Although India was a united land well before that, the divide and rule policy of the British left a big scar on the nation which is still today felt in the divisional politics of caste and religion and increasingly of race too. Interestingly enough, recent DNA studies across India have revealed that there is in fact little variance and all our great nation descends from two common race cutting across religious and caste divides.
Our independence day is one to remember that we have a lot of work still left to erase some of these prejudices and divides, and build a nation that encompasses the need of all our brothers and sisters. Like this last photo of a street child beaming joyfully clutching a handful of flags, India is foremost a nation of joy.
